How to prepare files for kraft label printing
Project sizes
Prepare the design in the size of the ordered use +2mm bleed on each side and a separate cutting line on a separate page.
For labels cut into single uses, the file should have 4 mm bleeds on each side.
CMYK
When designing graphics on kraft paper, consider the impact of the natural brown background on color perception. CMYK printing without white underprint results in muted, warmer colors – which may be a desired effect in ecological or artisanal projects. To achieve more saturated and vivid colors, it is recommended to use a white underprint.
It is also possible to print exclusively in white, which gives a subtle and elegant effect, well-suited to the texture of kraft. Printing only in black, with or without white underprint, also works well – it allows for high readability and strong contrast while maintaining the raw aesthetic of the material.
Due to the fibrous structure of the paper, despite its machine smoothness, the ink coverage is not as uniform as on coated substrates. This should be considered a natural feature of the material, affecting the final visual effect.
Black solid
The best black effect is achieved using 100% K.
Designing cutting/scoring lines
The cutting line should meet the following requirements
- Be a closed curve in red color (100%M+100%Y).
- Where possible, use straight lines instead of curves – this will shorten the plotter's working time.
- Avoid unnecessary vertices – too many control points can slow down the cutting process.
- Cutting and scoring lines should be saved in a separate file.
- The start and end of the cut should be on a straight line, not on an arc – this improves cutting precision.
Note! When ordering with the option of cutting into uses, the Client prepares only the scoring line (in the size of the ordered label). Do not add cutting lines for single uses.
Note
If the label shape is too complex, the final product may slightly differ from the design (slight rounding).
