Technical Parameters of Books and Brochures
Guidelines / Parameters
The maximum allowable number of pages and available publication format depends on the type of binding, paper weight of the pages and cover, and the publication format. If the permissible parameters are exceeded during calculation, an appropriate message will appear as a result of the calculation.
Cover Enhancement
Book and brochure covers printed on coated papers with a weight of ≥ 250 g/m² can be enhanced to increase durability and aesthetics:
Lamination: matte, glossy, Soft-Touch.
Selective UV varnishing - only for laminated covers.
3D Raised Selective Varnishing - only for laminated covers.
Liquid Metal: gilding, silvering - only for laminated covers.
Types of Binding
Saddle stitching - shaped spine, allowing more sheets to be stitched, and brochures are flat and do not open automatically.
Perfect binding – durable and aesthetic solution for books with greater volume.
Hardcover – rigid cover laminated with self-adhesive paper with matte or glossy laminate.
Rigid, laminated cover with cardboard thickness: 2 mm.
The surface is enhanced only with matte or glossy laminate.
Blocks glued hot in a gluer (as with softcover binding).
The first page of the book is glued to the endpaper (area approx. 4 mm).
Spiral binding - spiral binding (optionally white and black).
Punching for binder – optional form of binding.
Without binding - in this case, the Client will receive loose pages NOTE! If imposition other than the one used by default in D&D, i.e., perfect binding or saddle stitching, is required, it should be precisely described in the order notes when placing the order.
Technical Notes
Digital printing technology – unlike offset technology, the laser device has a high printing temperature, the paper slightly shrinks and undergoes slight waviness, which may be visible in the book spine.
For economic reasons, our books in some formats have the paper grain along the shorter edge, which may cause greater waviness of the sheets and less durability of the binding. If binding according to bookbinding art is necessary, please consult the printing price with Customer Service Department
How to Prepare a Project for Printing Books and Brochures
Project Sizes
Prepare the project pages in the size of the ordered use +2mm bleed on each side, and the cover based on the template - the template will be generated after entering all the parameters of the book/brochure in the calculator (does not apply to spiral bindings).
Preparing the Work
Prepare the project for digital printing. All the rules for properly preparing the file can be found in the Help section.
Preparing the Interior
Page Layout
The file should contain all the pages of the book or brochure, including blank pages (vacats).
Imposition is not necessary – arranging pages on printing sheets and folding them is handled by the print shop.
Margins
For reading convenience, we recommend margins of 2.5 cm or using mirror margins for even and odd pages in projects with different margins.
Preparing the Cover
Hardcover
In the case of hardcover, the bleed should be increased to 15 mm to ensure the paper wraps around the cardboard. (we recommend using the generated template)
Do not place graphics or text within 8 mm around the spine.
Cover Margins
In double-sided printed glued binding, leave an unprinted area of 5 mm around the spine on the inner side.
Spine Format
The width of the spine depends on the number of sheets, type of paper, and weight. 10 sheets of offset paper 90g/m2≅ 1 mm. After entering all parameters into the calculator, the client will receive information about the width of the spine of the publication/book/brochure along with the calculation.
For stitched brochures, the spine is formed automatically during stitching and does not require an additional project.
Avoid Dark Fill on Creases
For double-sided covers on coated boards, we do not recommend using dark fill on creases on the inner side of the cover, as they may crack.
